Founded
in 2004, the Public Education Fund of Charlottesville-Albemarle
is a community-based nonprofit organization
established to improve the quality of teaching
and learning in Charlottesville and Albemarle
County public schools so that all students
have the education necessary for full participation
in the economic, civic, and cultural life
of our society. The Public Education Fund
believes that strong public schools are critical
to Charlottesville and Albemarle Countys
viability and that the community must take
action to ensure their success. By acting
as a bridge between the community and the
classroom, the Public Education Fund increases
the availability and impact of resources for
students and teachers throughout our public
schools.

In the fall of 2003, representatives of parent
associations, the Charlottesville and Albemarle
school boards, and the Charlottesville-Albemarle
Commission on Children and Families formed
a steering committee to determine the potential
for starting a private fund to support public
education. This group initiated and oversaw
a formal needs assessment that involved broad
and diverse representation of the Charlottesville-Albemarle
community. The needs assessment strongly indicated
that a private fund can provide a structure
to enrich and support excellence in public
schools, while strongly advocating full and
continuing public funding. The study determined
that the opportunities for an educational
fund are broad, and could enhance our public
schools and community by aiding in the development
of creative and innovative approaches towards
excellence in our public schools. As a result,
the Public Education Fund of Charlottesville-Albemarle
was established as a donor-advised fund within
the Charlottesville Area Community Foundations
well-established philanthropic programs. This
unique partnership between our City and County
school systems and the community, will provide
opportunities for our schools beyond the scope
of current public resources and enhance learning
for all of the children of Charlottesville
and Albemarle County.
